Rockstar Games is removing the cost of upgrading some older copies of Grand Theft Auto V to current-generation consoles, The Verge reported. The change gives PS4 and Xbox One players a cheaper path to the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S versions months before Grand Theft Auto VI is scheduled to arrive.
According to The Verge, the free upgrade begins June 18. Players who own any PS4 version of GTA V will be eligible, while Xbox One eligibility applies to the digital version of the game.
The move means eligible players will not have to buy a separate current-generation copy. The Verge reported that the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S version otherwise costs $39.99, and noted that Rockstar previously charged an upgrade fee.
What players get
Rockstar announced the upgrade change alongside a GTA Online update, according to The Verge. That update will add heists at the Kortz Center in July.
The report did not list any new content tied directly to the free console upgrade beyond access to the current-generation version. The main change for eligible owners is the removal of the added purchase or upgrade cost.
The offer also arrives as Rockstar prepares the next main entry in the series. The Verge reported that GTA VI is set for release on November 19.
GTA VI details remain limited
Rockstar has not released another trailer for GTA VI since the previous public look at the game, The Verge reported. The price for GTA VI also has not been announced, according to the same report.
The upcoming release is already affecting the wider games calendar, The Verge reported. Some developers have been changing their own release plans to avoid launching against Rockstar’s next Grand Theft Auto title.
For now, the concrete update is for players who still own GTA V on older consoles. Starting June 18, eligible PS4 and Xbox One owners can move to the PS5 or Xbox Series X/S version without paying again, according to The Verge.
