Grand Theft Auto VI will cost $79.99 for its standard edition, The Verge reported Wednesday, giving players a key detail ahead of one of the year’s most closely watched game launches. The Verge said an Ultimate Edition will be priced at $99.99.
Preorders are scheduled to open at midnight local time, according to The Verge. The game can be reserved for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.
The Verge reported that GTA VI is set to launch on Nov. 19. The pricing puts the standard version at the upper end of current console game pricing, a point that has drawn attention as publishers and platform holders have raised prices across parts of the games business.
Pricing follows months of attention
The Verge said the price had been the subject of speculation before the announcement. It noted that gaming costs have increased over the past year, including higher prices for some consoles and games.
As one example, The Verge cited Nintendo’s move to price some Switch 2 games at $69 or $79. The new GTA VI standard edition lands at the top of that range.
The next Grand Theft Auto has been in development under intense public scrutiny because of the series’ scale and the long gap since the last mainline entry. The Verge reported that GTA VI will arrive more than 10 years after Grand Theft Auto V.
The Verge also reported that the release date has been pushed back more than once. It described GTA VI as expected to be the biggest game of the year and said some other games have been planning their own release timing to steer clear of it.
Rockstar has been revealing details gradually
Rockstar Games has released information about GTA VI in stages over the past year, according to The Verge. The most recent detail highlighted by The Verge was the game’s official cover art.
The Verge reported that earlier trailers introduced the game’s protagonists, Jason and Lucia. Those trailers also showed parts of the story set around Vice City, according to The Verge.
The pricing announcement gives players the clearest look yet at what they will pay at launch, while leaving the broader rollout tied to the preorder opening and the Nov. 19 release date. The Verge characterized the report as a developing story.
