An egg was thrown toward San Antonio Spurs star Victor Wembanyama outside his New York hotel after Wednesday’s Game 4 loss to the Knicks, according to The Associated Press. The incident added to a tense night around Madison Square Garden as the Knicks’ win left the Spurs facing elimination in the NBA Finals.
The Associated Press reported that video shared online showed Wembanyama arriving at his hotel with security when at least one egg was thrown in his direction. The hotel was a few blocks south of Madison Square Garden, according to AP.
The video did not show who threw the egg, AP reported. It showed the egg breaking against a street sign near the hotel entrance.
AP reported that Wembanyama turned back and confronted someone near the doorway moments after the egg hit the sign. He then went inside the hotel.
The Spurs did not immediately answer AP’s request for more information on whether the egg made contact with Wembanyama. An NYPD spokesperson told AP the department had no record on file related to the egg incident.
The scene followed a damaging loss for San Antonio. According to AP, the Spurs gave up a 29-point lead in Game 4, putting them on the brink of elimination against New York.
AP reported that Wembanyama also missed two key free throws late in the game. The loss sent the Spurs back to their hotel amid a charged atmosphere outside and across the city.
New York’s win triggered large street celebrations, according to AP. Fans gathered in public areas, set off fireworks, climbed lampposts and, in some places, clashed with police, AP reported.
The New York Police Department said 56 people were arrested on charges including assault and disorderly conduct, according to AP. In a statement cited by AP, the department said large crowds again engaged in “incredibly reckless and dangerous behavior” during and after the game.
