JD Vance and wife Usha announce birth of fourth child
The vice president’s son, Alec Neel Vance, was born Sunday at Walter Reed, according to a family statement.

Vice President JD Vance and second lady Usha Vance have welcomed their fourth child, adding a rare White House-era birth to the history of the vice presidency. The couple said their son, Alec Neel Vance, was born Sunday at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland.
In a statement reported by AP and Reuters, the Vances said, “We are excited to announce that our baby boy, Alec Neel Vance, was born this morning.” The statement added that Usha Vance and the baby are healthy and that the couple’s older children were eager to meet their brother.
The birth makes Alec Neel Vance the first child born to a sitting vice president in more than 150 years, according to AP and Reuters. The White House Historical Association says the last such case came in 1870, when Vice President Schuyler Colfax and his second wife, Ellen Wade, had a son, Schuyler Colfax III.

JD Vance, who is from Ohio, and Usha Vance met at Yale Law School, where both graduated in 2013, according to AP and Reuters. Usha Vance is the daughter of Indian immigrants.
The couple’s oldest child, Ewan, was born in 2017. Their second son, Vivek, was born in 2020, and their daughter, Mirabel, followed in 2021.
Vance served in the US Marine Corps before entering national politics. AP and Reuters described him as an outspoken supporter of larger families, a theme he raised as he began his 2021 campaign for a US Senate seat in Ohio.
As vice president, Vance also spoke about birth rates at the 2025 March for Life, an anti-abortion rally in Washington. “I want more babies in the United States of America,” he said at the event, according to AP and Reuters.
Other recent births in the administration
The Vances’ announcement follows other recent births among senior figures in President Donald Trump’s administration, according to AP and Reuters. Katie Miller, wife of White House deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller, recently gave birth to the couple’s fourth child.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt and her husband, Nicholas Riccio, had their second child in May, AP and Reuters reported. The Vance family did not announce any additional details beyond the baby’s name, birthplace and health update.
