The GDP growth formula

The period growth rate is ((current GDP ÷ previous GDP) − 1) × 100. If current GDP is 28,010 and previous GDP was 27,610, output increased by about 1.45% during the period. The absolute number is meaningful only when both figures use the same currency, unit, seasonal adjustment, and price basis.

Period growth versus annualized growth

A quarterly change is not automatically a yearly change. U.S. headline GDP releases often express quarter-to-quarter growth at an annualized rate. The annualized result compounds the period ratio four times for quarterly data. It describes what a full year would look like if that pace persisted; it is not a forecast that the pace will continue.

Nominal and real GDP cannot be mixed

Nominal GDP uses current prices, so its growth includes both changes in production and changes in prices. Real GDP adjusts for inflation. Comparing a real figure with a nominal figure produces a meaningless result. Check the series label and units before calculating.

What this calculator leaves out

GDP estimates are revised, population figures may use different reference dates, and international comparisons require consistent exchange-rate or purchasing-power methods. GDP per person is an average, not a measure of household income or how evenly output is distributed.
