Amazon has changed the 32GB version of its 2023 Fire HD 10 tablet, adding more memory and raising the price, according to The Verge. The change matters for buyers of Amazon’s low-cost tablets because the updated model costs $154.99, up from $139.99 for the earlier 32GB configuration.

The Verge reported that the 32GB Fire HD 10 now ships with 4GB of RAM, compared with 3GB on the versions Amazon sold when the tablet debuted in 2023. Amazon’s tablet line most recently received a new model with the Fire HD 8 in 2024, according to The Verge, making this a hardware tweak to an existing device rather than a new Fire HD 10 launch.

What changed

The upgrade applies to the 32GB storage model, according to The Verge. The 64GB Fire HD 10 still comes with 3GB of RAM, and the rest of the listed specifications are unchanged across the two versions.

Those specifications include a 10.1-inch display with 1,920 x 1,200 resolution, a 2GHz eight-core processor, battery life rated at 13 hours and support for expandable storage through a microSD card, The Verge reported. The updated 32GB model is available only with lock screen ads at purchase, though The Verge said those ads can be removed later for a one-time charge.

Amazon also continues to sell the older 32GB Fire HD 10 with 3GB of RAM for $139.99, according to The Verge. The report said that model may disappear as inventory runs out.

Why Amazon may have made the change

Amazon has not said why it revised the tablet’s memory configuration, The Verge reported. The change arrives as the broader electronics industry deals with tighter supplies of memory chips tied to data center demand for artificial intelligence systems, according to The Verge.

The Verge pointed to Valve’s Steam Machine as another example of hardware plans shifting during the memory crunch. Valve said that system would use one 16GB RAM stick rather than offering a pair of 8GB sticks as originally announced as an option, according to The Verge.

AFTVnews, which The Verge cited, suggested Amazon may be having difficulty sourcing the parts used in the original Fire HD 10 configuration. Amazon has not confirmed that explanation, according to The Verge.

For shoppers, the choice is now narrower than the spec sheet first suggests. The lower-storage Fire HD 10 has the higher RAM option at a higher price, while the 64GB version keeps more storage but less RAM, based on the product configurations described by The Verge.
